What is corrosion under insulation?

Insulation is used in the industry to prevent unwanted cold and heat transfer. In addition, insulated pipes protect against skin injuries. When an insulation system is not functioning optimally, corrosion under insulation can occur. CUI often occurs on insulated pipes and equipment at service temperatures from 0°C to 175°C., because the locations where CUI occurs are difficult to detect and it also depends on several factors, it is a difficult phenomenon to predict and control.

What risks does CUI pose?

CUI poses a wide range of risks that can cause serious consequences and even casualties. In fact, CUI occurs under the insulation and is therefore considered a hidden defect. Corrosion can often run its course undisturbed in the process industry, and is sometimes called a silent killer. To observe corrosion under insulation, it is important to perform regular inspections and maintenance on the facilities.
